Sydney, Australia, is the setting for
World Youth Day (WYD) next month. Sydney is inviting young people from all around the world to come together and share their faith. And young people in the Clifton Diocese are putting in the effort to fund their pilgrimages.
Alex Day from St Margaret Mary Church in Coleford and myself, Lizzi Walker of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Church in Churchdown will be representing the Deanery of Gloucester.
The trip comes at a considerable price, meaning that Alex and I have had to do some fundraising.
One idea that was put forward was car washing, by my Parish Priest Father Kevin Hennessey. The plan was put into practice at Coleford where we had sponges and buckets at the ready; washing nearly 20 cars with help from friends and family, the weather was lovely making it quite a nice and enjoyable evening. All bode well for the following morning at Churchdown with 12 cars already signed up before we had started.
Unfortunately, the weather the following day wasn’t so kind the heavens just opened meaning that we had to postpone. Most of the week the weather remained inclement however, by the weekend the weather was on the up, so last Sunday (1 June) we headed for the church with only a few drops of rain. We met up with Alex and her mum and between us we washed almost another 30 cars.
Between the two days we raised nearly £300. We hope that people were pleased with our car washings and thank people for their generous donations.
Alex, myself and our teams all enjoyed ourselves, and we have raised a sizeable amount towards our trip to Australia.
