Preferential Option for the Poor

4 February 2012

‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’ is our podcast series giving you a starting point to discover more of what’s often been called the Church’s best kept secret. ‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’ is written and presented by our former Director of Schools and Colleges Ian McNiff. Ian’s also written an excellent booklet to accompany the podcasts. In this episode Ian explores the preferential option for the poor.

The ‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’ booklet can be downloaded along with the podcast in the multimedia panel on the right.

‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’ continues each Saturday. We’ll go on to explore solidarity, dignity of work, and care for creation.

Although produced through our Department for Schools and Colleges ‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’ is an ideal starting point for individuals, groups and parishes to begin to look at the Church’s social doctrine.

The previous episode is still online. Ian set out the themes and principles of Catholic social teaching in introductory episodes to the series.

For further reading, the ‘Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church’ is available from the Vatican website.

Another website to help you find out more is catholicsocialteaching.org.uk. It was created by livesimply and is based on the radical idea that God calls us to look hard at our lifestyles and live simply, sustainably and in solidarity with poor people at home and overseas. The website was funded by Jesuit Fund for Social Justice, Progressio, Sisters of Mercy, and CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development).
