Father Richard McKay, Parish Priest of St Nicholas of Tolentino in Bristol’s Easton spoke about the remarkable artwork that will adorn the church in this soon to be “re-born” parish. Father Richard was a guest on BBC Bristol and BBC Somerset’s ‘Sunday Starts’.
Talking with presenter Trevor Fry on Sunday (28 September), Father Richard described the larger items the parish have received from Malawian artists. He also took a couple of the smaller pieces into the studio.
You can still hear Father Richard’s interview by using the ‘listen again’ facility on the
BBC Bristol website.
Father Richard told
cliftondiocese.com, “It is such a great joy to receive these incredibly beautiful carvings that will bring a unique beauty to our ‘re-born’ St Nick’s church.
“With so many parishioners from different parts of Africa and the Caribbean it is so important to have some images of Jesus, the universal brother, which are not white and western. The skill of our Malawian artists and carvers is also matched by the depth of contemplation and understanding that has so clearly shaped them.
“All who have seen them here are thrilled and filled with wonder with their beauty and powerful symbolism. Truly these are a precious gift from the Church in Africa to the Church in Britain.”
The original wood carvings are the work of the
KuNgoni Art and Craft Centre in Mua, Malawi. The centre is run by the White Fathers and keeps alive the traditions and culture of Malawi. Pieces from this celebrated art centre are on display in the
Vatican Museums.
