The start of 2005 was overshadowed by the terrible tsunami in the Far
East with terrible loss of life, housing and working conditions. The
end of Lent 2005 was also a sad time, owing to the illness and death of
Pope John Paul. He had lived a long time and his pontificate will long
be remembered.
The very quick vote for Cardinal Ratzinger as Pope Benedict XVI, lifted
our spirits. All the events in Rome were very well covered by the
television cameras.
On the 22 May a coach load of us set off for Honiton in Devon for the
annual Mass in honour of St Rita of Cascia. Roses were blessed and
distributed after Mass. The weather was dreadful, with a rough wind and
rain, but as usual a large crowd of people were there, to witness a
very uplifting service.
Later in the year on very hot Sunday afternoon, some of us attended the
pilgrimage and Mass at Glastonbury, always a place of prayer. The
terrible bombings in London were spoken of by Bishop Declan.
Later in the year Churches Together in Peasedown were invited to a day
away at Chilcompton, Ammerdown not being available. A very interesting
day was spent listening to talks, singing hymns and a renewal of
praying together with our friends.
A week later with Philomena and friends from Bath, we attended Mass at
Cardiff, at the church of St Peter, where we once again enjoyed a
feeling of united worship and prayer, making for us a memorable day.
On Christmas Day I attended a Pontifical Mass at Downside Abbey with my sister, a fitting end to the year.
