28 October 2009
Clergy from our diocese met today (28 October) in the next stage of the review looking at the way we positively plan for the future.
Our pastoral guidelines ‘
Called to be a People of Hope’ promised that a committee would be formed to review existing deanery and parish structures and make recommendations by Autumn 2009.
This committee made up of laity and clergy from across our diocese, convened in December 2008 and consists of Canon John Cunningham, Father David Mills, Deacon Kevin Moloney, Mrs Caroline Williams, Mrs Linda Dineen and Mr Roy Beckwith. The committee is chaired by Canon Bernard Massey. The initial consultation began in April 2009.

Canon Bernard said: “The draft document published at today’s meeting is the result of the initial consultation process undertaken by the committee which looked at how we plan for the future. We were delighted with the good level of engagement and replies from parishes. This helped to inform the recommendations in the draft document. This engagement and involvement represents a positive approach to the pastoral planning for our diocese for the next five to 10 years.
“Whilst we cannot totally predict the future it is clear the number of active parish priests will be fewer. We need to ensure that all our parishes have their sacramental and pastoral needs met in light of the anticipated available priests.
“I am confident that as a result of this second stage of consultation we will be able to achieve a pastoral plan for our diocese that meets the needs and aspiration of the vast majority of our people. The combined wisdom of the Catholic population of the diocese is such that we can go forward together in hope and confidence with a plan that comes from a shared vision.”
