Sarum College meets £60,000 appeal inside six months

Sarum College, an independent centre for spiritual and religious education in Salisbury, where Bishop Declan is a trustee, has achieved its latest fundraising goal by raising £60,000 in under six months.

The money was needed to carry out essential refurbishment work on five bedrooms in the ‘attic’ of Sarum College – part of which is a 17th century house, reputedly designed by Sir Christopher Wren. With the money raised, work has already begun to modernise the rooms and make them available for students and visitors. They all have fine views of Salisbury Cathedral and will provide additional en-suite accommodation, with one room being fully equipped for visitors with disabilities.

The appeal was launched in April this year, and donations started to come in almost immediately. The final total was achieved last week, with the help of a single donation of £20,000 from an individual supporter of the College’s work. A sponsored walk during the summer by one of the College’s volunteers raised an impressive £8,000. Significant contributions came from other individual donors, and one gift from a Trust, as well as lots of smaller – but absolutely invaluable – individual donations.

Sarum College’s Development Director, Stephen Hackett, commented, “The response to the appeal has been breathtaking – and we cannot say a big enough ‘thank you’ to all those who have helped us in whatever way they could. To have reached our target so quickly, and with such a high proportion of the funds coming from individual friends and supporters of the College, is really remarkable. It is a testament to the affection and high regard which people have for Sarum College and its work. Having the money means that the work can proceed during the autumn, and the rooms will be in use from January 2007 – earlier than we had originally planned.

“However, the fundraising never stops – as an independent charity we depend very much on fundraising to support our work in religious and spiritual education and dialogue, and to maintain our beautiful but costly buildings.

“Sarum College has just finished celebrating its first 10 years – and some people were surprised that we’d made it! This latest appeal shows that there is a huge appreciation of what we provide here. What better – and more encouraging - way to embark on our second decade?”

Sarum College is an independent ecumenical Christian centre for learning, hospitality and spiritual growth based at 19 The Close, Salisbury SP1 2EE. Sarum College receives no regular funding from churches or other public bodies, and is a registered charity (no. 309501).
