“When the day of Pentecost came round, they were all gathered together in one place.” Jesus told them to wait for what he had promised, namely, the gift of the Father of the Holy Spirit. Apparently, the apostles took Our Lord at his word for “they were all engaged unanimously in prayer, along with the women, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the brothers.”
This would seem then to be the best attitude for preparing for Pentecost. The powerful outpouring of the Spirit should fill us with fresh energy and zeal to be his witnesses wherever we are in the world. The aim of this day is to make space and room for this to happen in our time.
A keen student of Scripture, Father Michael Healy recently returned from a programme of studies in the Holy Land. The second semester in Jerusalem was all about exploring “the text in context” and Father Michael took full advantage of the opportunities offered there by the Sisters of Zion to reflect on what the message of Jesus might mean for us today. If he has come up with more questions than answers maybe this is because that is the Jewish way of finding faith by struggling with the texts which are never simple, but always enlightening. He likes nothing better than sharing these insights, and maybe boring people to death!
Sister Ann O’Sullivan is a La Retraite sister and co-founder of Emmaus House. Her background is in Ignatian spirituality and she has a particular interest in working towards an integrated approach of bringing together the spiritual, psychological and physical aspects of what it means to be human. So often the spiritual can be seen as something separate, whereas her belief is that it belongs alongside and is part of the whole personality.
Sister Ann brings a creative edge to her work, especially in liturgy and different forms of worship and prayer and retreats, for she finds it a privilege to be with others on their life journey. Whilst often working with groups, she offers individual spiritual accompaniment and coaching.
The cost is £15.00 and includes lunch and refreshments.
