Sister Joins the Sleep Out

31 January 2009

A sister well-known for helping Bristol’s homeless people is going one step further when she sleeps in the open air herself – to raise funds for a Catholic charity.

Sister Bernadette Sammon from the St Nicholas of Tolentino parish organises the much-needed ministry of the door along with a dedicated group of volunteers.

As we look forward to the start of Poverty and Homelessness Action Week which begins today (31 January) and runs until 8 February Alabaré Christian Care Centres are asking to support Sister Bernadette by sponsoring people who sleep out or even join in.

Alabaré Christian Care Centres are holding a series of sponsored sleep outs (or sleep ins) on Friday 27 February and they want as many people as possible to get involved. All money raised will be used to support the work of their Wiltshire drop-in centres for the homeless in Salisbury, Devizes and Trowbridge as well as their Bristol scheme for people moving on from hostels.

Sleep outs / ins are being held at the following venues:

Salisbury
Salisbury Cathedral (outdoors) open to all
St Thomas’ Church (outdoors) small numbers being arranged by the Church

Bristol
Pip n’ Jay (outdoors) open to all - this is where Sister Bernadette is taking part

Warminster
St George’s Catholic Church (outdoors) being arranged by the Church

Tisbury
A village-wide Sleep in at the Hinton Hall is being arranged by a small team from the village.

The sleep outs will follow on from Poverty and Homelessness Action Week, which focuses on ending homelessness and poverty and encouraging as many communities as possible across the UK to hold events to raise awareness of the issues in their community.

The sleep outs are a great way to encourage people to think about what it is like to sleep rough. Although taking part will not replicate the problems faced by those who have to sleep out night after night, it does provide an opportunity to show some support and raise something toward the funds Alabaré desperately needs to continue the year round provision of our drop-in centres.

Last year Alabaré’s sleep outs raised £14,000. This year it’s hoped to be even bigger and better as people come together across the region to raise badly needed funds. Over 100 sleepers are expected at Salisbury Cathedral alone but need more sleepers in both Salisbury and to join Sister Bernadette in Bristol.

If you would like to take part call Tony Richmond at Alabaré on 08450 78 68 08. If sleeping out does not appeal you can sponsor a sleep out online.
