A national organisation dedicated to promoting good practice in music
and liturgy is focusing its annual Summer School on mission. Go out to
the whole world, Proclaim the Good News! is the theme which will be
explored and celebrated from 1 to 5 August at Sneaton Castle Centre,
Whitby, Yorkshire. The Society of Saint Gregory (SSG), now in its 76th
year, has made a priority of liturgical education according to the
principles of Vatican II.
An SSG Summer School is a thought-provoking and stimulating experience,
combining worship, workshops and lectures, as well as the opportunity
to meet ordained and lay people from all over the country. This year’s
team of directors, Father Aidan Rossiter (liturgy) and Catherine
Christmas (music) will design the worship and share their considerable
experience with the participants. Says Society Chairman, Alan Smith,
“this is the highlight of the SSG’s year: an opportunity to reflect on
your ministry and to refresh it. Whether this is your first or your
fiftieth Summer School, I can promise you a warm welcome and wonderful
experience”.
An exciting team of speakers and workshop leaders will be there to
share their skills and exchange ideas. This interaction between
participants and leaders is an integral part of the Summer School
experience, as is the free time when lasting friendships and creative
collaborations are often initiated. Here are just a few of the comments
from the participants of the 2004 Summer School in New Hall: “It was a
real joy to spend time with people who know and care about the same
things I do.”; “Excellent! The speakers were listening to the Holy
Spirit as they prepared – no doubt about it.”; “Much deep thought, and
a lot of laughter too.”; “Made me think, sing, pray – then think some
more.”; “What made Summer School so special was the people; I truly
feel that blessings were poured down on me by all those I came into
contact with last week."
In addition to its Summer School, the Society of Saint Gregory
publishes a quarterly journal, Music and Liturgy, an excellent source
of information and study on liturgical matters which also contains a
very practical Liturgy Planner. One of the Society’s founders, Mgr
James Crichton, was an ardent advocate for the renewal of the liturgy,
and his memory is honoured through the annual Crichton Memorial
Lecture, held each November on the occasion of the AGM.
