The Bristol (26) Circle of the Catenian Association - a group of Catholic professional and businessmen - held their annual schools public speaking contest the Newman Hall at the Sacred Heart parish in Westbury-on-Trym in Bristol.
Eight students from Catholic schools throughout the Clifton Diocese participated. They young people spoke on one of six selected subjects.
The adjudicators were Tom Millington, Circle Membership Officer; Tony Sadler, retired Headmaster from Westbury, Wiltshire; and Louise White, a teacher from St Peter & Paul Catholic Primary, Bristol.
The winner was Liam Smyth from St Bede’s College in Lawrence Weston, Bristol, who spoke on “Being fat is a right, not a disease”. Second place went to James Cullen from St Joseph’s College in Swindon, who spoke about “You need a knife for protection in Britain today”. Third place went to Erin McCabe, again from St Bede’s. She also spoke on “You need a knife for protection in Britain today”.
All participants were presented a framed certificate of merit as well as gift vouchers. First, second and third placements were presented with additional certificates indicating their level of success.
