A
wonderful concert brought many people to
St Peter’s in Gloucester on Saturday (17 April) night. Anthony Smith reports for
cliftondiocese.com.
Dr Roy Massey MBE gave an organ recital on the recently restored
Compton organ in St Peter’s Church on London Road as part of our 150th anniversary spring festival commemorating the opening of the church in 1860 which had been designed by Gilbert Blount in the 1850s.
The music chosen by Dr Massey emphasised the tonal qualities of the organ using various combinations and stops to show off music such as Lemmens’ Triumphal March, the Gothic Suite by Boellmann and Widor’s Tocatta from his fifth symphony - and allowing the music to be heard as the various composers intended.
Dr Massey’s comments on the organ were: “John Compton was a very clever and ingenious organ builder, and the organ at St Peter’s is John Compton at his very best. The 32 foot stop being the purest and loudest that I have ever heard in all my musical life, especially with the wonderful acoustics at St Peter’s.”
There are two further concerts in St Peter’s soon. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy some fantastic music and join with us to celebrate this important anniversary in the life of our vibrant city parish.
Looking ahead, Tuesday 4 May sees
St Peter’s High School will present a choral and orchestral concert of England’s great composers - past present and future. Tickets are priced at just £5.00 and £4.00 for senior citizens and students. For £10.00 you can buy a family ticket. All tickets will be available on the door of the night of the concert or in advance from the church secretary at St Peters Presbytery. Your ticket price includes for a glass of wine or a soft drink at the end of the concert as well. All proceeds from our concerts will contribute towards the restoration of the Sanctuary ceiling.
Another date for the diary is Friday 7 May when the much renowned Chalford Silver Band (rated amongst the top 200 bands) will play music from Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and of course a march from Sousa together with other popular music.
The tickets for that night are priced at £6.00 and £5.00 for senior citizens and students. Again you can buy them in advance or on the night and you’ll get that enjoyable glass of wine or soft drink at the end of the concert. You’ll also receive a wonderful warm welcome.
