St Peter’s High School and Sixth Form Centre in Gloucester is preparing to celebrate the
visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the UK in September. The school’s Lay Chaplain Mandy Baker writes with the details for
cliftondiocese.com.
Having St Peter as our patron it is only right that we are preparing to welcome St Peter’s successor to our shores!
Our beginning of year Mass will be celebrated on Thursday 16 September to coincide with the Pope’s arrival in the United Kingdom. During this Mass hampers of food, collected by each form group, will be presented during the offertory procession and distributed later to homeless people, the elderly and refugees in Gloucestershire. These hampers will be decorated in papal colours and will enable us to reach out in service to the needy of our area during this historic visit.
Pupils are already hard at work designing and creating the Pope’s coat of arms on clay tile and commemorative ‘stained glass windows’ to be displayed during the Mass. Schools departments are also contributing to the celebrations with students composing songs and poems to welcome the Pope, designing memorabilia and exploring the role of the Pope in the 21st century.
Students are also looking forward to attending the 'Big Assembly' in Strawberry Hill and the Prayer Vigil in Hyde Park.
As well as all the activity we are praying the prayer for the papal visit asking the Lord to make this historic time one of great blessing for our people.
Other papal visit preparations take place on the eve of the Holy Father’s historic visit to the United Kingdom. A
special evening of prayers will take place in the Cathedral led by Bishop Declan and Bishop Tom Burns of Menevia, we will join together and pray that the papal visit lights up the heart of our nation.
All are welcome to take part from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm on Wednesday 15 September.
