The Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust's annual sponsored ride/walk
was held on 13th September 2003 and rasised just over £47,000. This is
an excellent result and is £4,000 more than was raised in 2002.
Half of all the money raised by the ride/walk goes to the Trust and the
other half has already been given to more than 140 churches or chapels
chosen by the participants.
The organiser of the ride/walk, Simon Ridley, commented:
“This is the main fundraising activity for the Gloucestershire Historic
Churches Trust and we are thankful for all the parishioners who took
part and all those who sponsored them. They have helped to preserve our
heritage”
The Chairman of the Trust, Jamie Eykyn, added:
“I am very gratified by the generosity of all those who gave their time
and money to this most worthy cause. You can be assured that all of
this money will go towards supporting the work of the Trust”.
Various awards are made to those individuals and groups who raised the largest sums and this years awards are as follows:
The GHTC Challenge Shield is awarded to the church or chapel that
raised the largest amount on the day. The Shield has been won by St
Mary’s Beverston who raised a magnificent £2006. That sum was raised by
one man, the Beverston organist John Evans, who wins the John Cannan
Trophy for the best individual performance by a participant between the
ages of 17 and 69.
The Eykyn Challenge Cup is awarded for the best group performance and
has been won by the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Stroud who
raised £2001. This is the first prize to have been won by a
non-Anglican church and reflects the fact the Trust supports, and is
supported by, a range of Christian churches and chapels.
Holmes Salver is awarded for the best individual performance by
participants over 70 years of age and has been won by Mr D Gilmore of
the Church of the Holy Ascension, Oddington.
Special mention should be made of Daniel Horton of St Margaret’s
Church, Bagendon who wins a cash prize for the best individual
performance by a participant under 16 years of age and who raised £170.
The GHTC Challenge Shield and the John Cannan Trophy will be presented
to John Evans on Sunday 21st March at St Mary’s Church, Beverston at
9:30am. The Eykyn Challenge Cup will be presented to the winners at the
Church of the Immaculate Conception, Stroud on Sunday 28th March at
10:00am. The cash prize will be presented to Daniel Horton at St
Margaret’s Church, Bagendon on Sunday 25th April at 10:00 am and the
Holmes Salver will be presented to Mr Gilmore at the Church of the Holy
Ascension, Oddington on Sunday 30th May.
The 2004 sponsored ride/walk will take place on Saturday 11th
September. It is hoped that more churches will participate so that the
Trust can continue to assist churches in their hour of need.
The Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust was established in 1980 and
is the largest grant giving body for churches and places of worship in
the County of Gloucestershire. Most of its income is generated by the
annual ride/walk and by legacies and gifts in memoriam.
The total value of grants made by the Trust to date is over £800,000.
The John Cannan Trophy has been donated by John Cannan, a founder
Trustee. The Eykyn Challenge Cup has been donated by the current
chairman, Jamie Eykyn. The Holmes Salver has been donated by Diana
Holmes, whose husband Francis created a record in 2002 when at the age
of 90 he rode his bike and raised over £1100.
