Father
Robert King, the
Catholic Chaplain to the University of Bristol, has received an awarded given by students at the university.
Father Robert picked up the award as the best non-member supporter of the Student Community Action Society for his good deed last year helping to ensure a Christmas party for children didn’t go without the popular bouncy castle!
Student Community Action (SCA) is a student led volunteering organisation that is part of the University of Bristol Student’s Union.
Over thirty projects throughout Bristol are run by SCA and every year students from the university volunteer thousands of hours of their own time to give something back to the community. The projects benefit a wide range of vulnerable groups, from helping at a homeless shelter or going on trips with disabled adults to talking to patients at a psychiatric hospital or running a day-centre for elderly people.
Alex Goater is the SCA Deputy Coordinator. He told cliftondiocese.com: “Aside from the many projects, every year SCA run a kid’s Christmas party and an elderly dinner dance. The kid’s Christmas party involves bringing underprivileged and disabled children to Churchill Hall for a day of activities including a bouncy castle, Father Christmas’ grotto and a Christmas themed disco. The elderly dinner dance brings together elderly people from around Bristol for an evening of dancing, with music supplied by a university jazz band, and a three course meal.
“These events take a lot of preparation and unfortunately not everything can go according to plan. At the last kid’s Christmas party the bouncy castle needed to be taken in a trailer on the back of a minibus from the Student’s Union to Churchill Hall. However, the man who had agreed to drive the minibus and trailer was unfortunately very ill and due to current driving regulations there were no members of SCA who could drive a minibus and trailer. Fortunately, I recalled that Father Robert would be able to drive the minibus and trailer were he free, and thankfully he was and so with no notice he kindly came to the Student’s Union and gave up his free time to drive the minibus and trailer to Churchill Hall.
“The bouncy castle is one of the favourite activities at the party and without Father Robert’s help we wouldn’t have been able to have it. As recognition of this act, at the annual end of year prize giving ceremony, known as the SCA Oscars, Father Robert won the best non-member category and was awarded a certificate and medal.
Father Robert said: “Student Community Action is a wonderful way for students to support the local community. I was delighted to help with the Christmas party by driving the mini bus.
“It’s very touching to receive a medal and reflective of how seriously the students involved with SCA take their work in the community.”
