Clifton Cathedral’s Christmas Morning Mass was celebrated with a
massive congregation. Not only was there standing room only as the
Cathedral filled to capacity well before Mass began at 10.00 am,
thousands more celebrated with the Cathedral community by watching live
on BBC One.
One call to the BBC sums up response to the Mass which part of the BBC
One series ‘Stranger in the Manger?’: “The programme was absolutely
brilliant. It was a work of art that was enjoyable even if you were not
religious.”
Other comments received by the Clifton Diocese mentioned the Cathedral
Dean, Canon Robert Corrigan’s, illustrated guide to the Christmas story
as bringing tears to the eyes.
The music, under the expert baton of the Cathedral’s Director of Music,
Richard Jeffrey-Grey also attracted appreciation such as: “the music
was terrific”.
Towards the conclusion of Mass Bishop Declan gave a special Christmas
Day reflection. One writer to the Diocese said: “the words will be a
great comfort to us all in respect of life and how it continues through
the Saviours death with something for everybody, the Resurrection.”
David Taviner, ‘Stranger in the Manger? Series Producer said: “It’s
been a fantastic team effort and the atmosphere, throughout, has been
tremendously positive and supportive.
“Sunday’s tremendous broadcast from Clifton Cathedral attracted 600,000
viewers; around 8% of the television audience at that time.”
