Successful Clergy Golf Tournament

18 September 2008

National Clergy Golf Society annual tournament has took place in Birmingham.  The event is organised by Dean of Swindon and Parish Priest of the town’s St Mary’s, Father Liam Slattery.  This is Father Liam’s report.

68 priests, making up ten teams (Birmingham, Clifton, Hexham & Newcastle, Leeds, Nottingham, Shrewsbury, Scotland, Shrewsbury, Southwark / Arundel & Brighton, Westminster) took part in the three days of competition.

The weather was to be the winner on the first day's play with one of the courses used (Aston Wood) closed due to the elements and play on Sutton Coldfield having to be abandoned due to the intensity of the rain.

Fortunes were to change with the completion of play on the next two days.

The team prize for the Catenian Cup was won by Westminster with a score of 218. Second were Nottingham on 205 and third were Scotland on 202.

Clifton, whose team comprised Canon Michael English, Fathers Tom Gunning and David Ryan and myself came in at tenth place on a score of 152.

The 2008 Champion Golfer was Joe Ryan from Westminster with Brian McNaught (Scotland) second and Pat Gilsenan (Birmingham) third.

Plans for next year’s competition, taking place in Nottingham, are already under way.
