Looking forward to the beginning of Lent, which commences on Wednesday
1 March, Christians in the Taunton will explore five of the hottest
issues facing society today.
Taunton Christians Together (TCT) is organising the special series of
events to draw people together from faith communities and the wider
public to reflect on some important subjects facing society in the
early 21st century. TCT is the umbrella group uniting Christian
churches of all traditions within the Somerset town and surrounding
villages.
Using a debating chamber format the subjects addressed will include
global warming, euthanasia, evangelism of other faiths, cloning and
stem-cell research and the relevance of marriage. Each evening’s debate
will involve a presentation by someone speaking in favour of a motion
and another person opposing the statement with seconders from sixth
formers of local schools. It is hoped that an atmosphere of mutual
respect will ensure that the debates are impassioned but positive.
Announcing the series of topics to be covered during the five week
programme, TCT’s Chairman, Reverend Dennis Cavaghan, said: “We are
hoping that church and non-church people will engage seriously and
level-headedly with some of the contemporary issues of today.”
