The Art of Understanding Conflict

Modern life often seems plagued with conflict: disputes, disagreements, misunderstandings, and arguments to name but a few examples. The emotional fall out that result can affect us in all sorts of ways. Gaining a better insight into the nature of our conflicts can really help. The Ammerdown Centre near Frome is soon to explore the personal side of conflict through art over the weekend of July 14 to 16 on its course Art and Conflict.

The weekend will be led by Marian Liebmann, the former Director of Mediation UK and professional art therapist who brings both experience and expertise to the subject. She is author/editor of “The Use of Art in Working with Conflict,” and “Art Approaches to Conflict.”

“Art continues to fascinate me as a medium for the exploration of conflict,” writes Marian, “because it provides more possibilities for expression than just words – colour, shape, size and texture – that can provide extra insights. You don’t have to be any good at art at all to benefit from this kind of exploration.”

The weekend course is aimed at anyone: those interested in gaining non-verbal insights into the conflicts in their lives, the potential of art and professionals too. Those working in the field of social justice, mediation, conflict resolution, community work or public servants will gain extra insights about conflict and techniques to look at conflict in a safe way.

The Ammerdown Centre offers bursaries of a third off of the full course fees for those in receipt of State Benefits or on low incomes by application. Non-residential options are also possible for studying this weekend course.

The Ammerdown Retreat and Conference Centre is run as an open lay Christian Community offering a programme of retreats and courses fostering ecumenical Christian spirituality, interfaith studies, peace, justice and reconciliation. Ammerdown also has a growing reputation as an excellent Conference venue.
