The Quiet Place

New retreat and conference centre opened by the Poor Clares at Woodchester in Gloucestershire.

From May this year the Sisters of the Convent of the Poor Clares, Woodchester, will be warmly welcoming visitors to their newly refurbished Day Retreat and Conference Centre, aptly named ‘The Quiet Place’. The Centre is located within the beautiful buildings and tranquil grounds of the Convent, tucked away in the peaceful setting of the Cotswolds.

The Sisters welcome groups to use the Centre, which is equipped to facilitate spiritual gatherings, business meetings or social functions, for one, or half day, events. The newly refurbished and modernised Centre has seating and meeting facilities for up to 30 visitors. A fully equipped self-catering kitchen is available; the Centre has its own private garden, and the extensive Convent grounds are also offered. The beautiful chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception is available for worship. Individuals are very welcome to come and use the Centre.

The Poor Clares, a Franciscan Order founded by St Francis of Assisi and St Clare in 13th century, have been in their Convent at Woodchester since 1860. Although essentially an enclosed and contemplative Order of prayer and meditation, they have undertaken many successful and relevant outreach apostolates in the local area - from running a school and orphanage in the early days, to ‘taking in’ laundry, running Work classes for local mill girls, and as a Guest House for working women. They live by Divine Providence.

Mother Irene Joseph, the Abbess, says, "We once again seek to reach out to the local community and beyond. This new venture is designed not only as an appealing and attractive business or social venue, but also as a quiet and serene setting for those groups or individuals who seek space and spiritual nourishment. There are so many people seeking peace and quiet, not only from their lives, but in their hearts. We feel we can offer that small, peaceful haven from a busy, turbulent world for a few precious moments…a bridgehead….a stepping stone."

"Go forth in peace for you have followed the good road. Go forth without fear, for he who created you has made you holy, has always protected you…." St Clare.
