A new course running at Salisbury’s
Sarum College.
This two-year course is designed for thoughtful Christian people who want to explore for themselves key features of their faith. It is offered by Sarum College in Salisbury as part of its ecumenical and educational vision.
A new year begins on Tuesday 29 September (7.00 pm to 9.00 pm) with ‘Opening up the Gospels’, after a free introductory session on Tuesday 15 September on ‘Eating, Drinking, and Being a Christian’. Every Tuesday, during three ten-week terms, students will examine how the Gospels came to be put together with such skill and subtlety, what exactly may be known in 2010 about the historical Jesus, and what galvanized the apostle Paul to engage in a mission that changed the world.
The course will be led this year by David Catchpole, Emeritus Professor of Theological Studies at the University of Exeter, and David Way, Theological Education Secretary at the Church of England’s Advisory Board of Ministry.
Students join in TQQ either as ‘auditing’ students who come just because they wish to join in the discussion of vital issues but without registering for a certificate award from the University of Surrey (in which case the cost is £60.00 per term, with appropriate concessions), or with the intention of registering and writing essays for such an award (in which case the cost is £100.00 per term, plus a one-off annual university registration fee of £50.00). Discretion is exercised for anyone who is keen to join but who may find the payment of fees difficult.
One past student commented that he had found it: “addictively stimulating”. Another said: “I have been challenged in my thinking and have been inspired to think through different theological viewpoints.” The University of Surrey review panel recently described it as: “a programme of study which students find inspirational, which provides intellectual challenge for all abilities and offers academic rigour for those seeking a University award.”
Full details of the plan for the TQQ year, including a week by week run down of the programme, may be obtained from
David Catchpole at Sarum College, 19 The Close, Salisbury SP1 2EE.
