12 March 2010
A group of 20 to 35 year-olds met for a day’s retreat at the Monastery of Our Lady and St Bernard at Brownshill in a beautiful, tranquil part of Gloucestershire.
Picking up on one of the sections of our pastoral guidelines ‘
Called to be a People of Hope’, the theme of the day was Mary: Woman of Hope. Cheltenham’s Father Tom Smith provided the group with some interesting and thought-provoking input on Mary, our personal relationship with her and her role in the prayer life of the Church. There was plenty of time to meet and chat with other Catholics of a similar age as well as opportunities for peace and quiet.
In addition to the Mass, with which we began the day, we also joined the nuns for their offices throughout the day. As well as an opportunity for personal reflection, many took the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. There was even time for a group walk.
The day seemed to be enjoyed by all. Stephanie, from Stroud said: “I thought it was lovely. It was just what I needed to hear at that point in my life; what Father Tom was saying really confirmed what I was thinking and reassured me a great deal. It was so great to meet people of a similar age and who were like-minded. I'm so glad I went along and thank you for making me feel so welcome; I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.”
