Town Honours Canon O’Brien

8 May 2009

Canon James O’Brien our dedicated Parish Priest in Chard is to be honoured by the town’s council next week.

Chard Town Council will bestow their Outstanding Service Award to the Parish Priest of the English Martyrs at a special ceremony on Wednesday (13 May).

The parchment Canon O’Brien will receive states:

“Recognition of outstanding service to the people of Chard.

“Whereas on 13 July 1982, the Chard Town Council resolved to recognise the long and outstanding service rendered to the people of chard by selected persons.

“It is hereby certified that the Town Council recognises the long and faithful service rendered to the people of Chard by Canon James Fanahan O’Brien.

“It is also hereby certified that such recognition and appreciation is recorded in the minutes of the annual town meeting.”

Canon O’Brien celebrated his 90th Birthday in January this and also celebrated 40 years as Parish Priest on 1 August last year.

He’s celebrating even more on 4 of June as that is the date of his 65 anniversary of ordination to the priesthood.

Chard parishioner Andrew O’Brien told cliftondiocese.com:  “What a record, few priests will achieve this record of service to God, and to the people of Chard - at English Martyrs), Crewkerne - at St Peter, and Ilminster - at St Joseph.  Yes!  That’s three churches!

“And to date nobody has heard the Canon utter the word retire; no he will carry on as long as he is fit and able!

“Sheila Theobald, Canon’s housekeeper plays a big part in Canon’s well being, and it’s due to Sheila that we have Canon James with us today.

“Thank God.”

Canon O'Brien has been our parish priest for 41 years. We have been blessed with love, guidence and care of our dedicated parish priest.
Canon's devotion to us all is exceptional, who ever or what ever he has love for all. Thanks to the devoted care of his housekeeper Sheila he has been able to continue to this wounderful age. It is so right of the town to honour him in this way. We are so proud of him. Congratulations Canon. God Bless.

Canon O'Brien is a true shephed to his flock. Within months of being in the parish we were the benificiaries of Canon's care for the sick. No sick call goes unheeded but is answered with immediacy whether in the middle of the night or during a busy day. Canon's devotion to his flock is exceptional. He does not want to retire and thanks to the devoted care of his housekeepeer Sheila, he has been able to coninue to this wonerful age. That the town should honour him in this way is thoroughly deserved. We are delighted for him.

My husband and I moved to Ilminster just over three years ago and we were immediately made to feel very welcome by Canon O'Brien and his deacons. The Canon is a most interesting man as well as being a wonderful parish priest. His knowledge of diocesan history, events and personalities, is second to none! He has a great sense of humour and an incredible memory. My husband is not a Catholic but often attends Mass with me, and the Canon always makes him feel especially welcome. We are only sorry we shall be away on the 'special award day'. Congratulations, Canon!

I have only known the Canon for a very short time, since March 2000, but know that he is well loved by all who meet him. They all get entered into his little black book. I class him as a good shepherd who looks after his flock very well. He is a kind considerate and affable gentleman. As Andrew O'Brien states, we must be grateful to Sheila Theobald for the care and attention she provides.
