In spite of severe weather warnings a good number of members of the
Union of Catholic Mothers (UCM) from around the Clifton Diocese
converged on the Cathedral for the celebration of Mass which preceded
the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The celebrant was Father Kevin Mortimer, spiritual director of the
Clifton UCM and Parish Priest of the Sacred Heart in nearby
Westbury-on-Trym. Bernadette Gryzbowska of the Cathedral Foundation was
cantor and the Clifton Diocese Director of Music, Richard Jeffrey-Gray,
provided the organ accompaniment.
Among the invited guests were officers from the Catholic Women’s League
(CWL) and Mothers' Union. To great disappointment Anne Keegan, the UCM
National President, was unable to be part of the occasion due to the
sudden serious illness of a member of her family. Their well-being was
included in our prayers.
The generous collection taken during Mass was divided between the
cathedral foundation's current charity, the Renal Unit at Southmead
Hospital in Bristol and the UCM’s charity, St Joseph's Home in Cotham,
Bristol run by the Little Sisters of the Poor.
The meeting took place in the Apostle Room, beneath the Cathedral.
Annual reports by the UCM’s officers: welfare work; study days;
fundraising events; the pilgrimage to Walsingham and a variety of
social gatherings, were heard.
Having completed a three year term of office, Pat Kissane stood down as
Diocesan President of the UCM. Pat is held in high regard by the
membership and was warmly thanked for her caring and effective
leadership.
Gertrude Scanlon, of St Gerard Majella in Knowle, Bristol was elected
as President. There was one other change of office, Rita Daws took over
from Pauline Morris was Media Officer. Presentations were made to both
Pat Kissane and Pauline Morris in recognition of their service to the
UCM.
