Vocations Mass Celebrated in Gloucester

A special deanery Mass was celebrated in English Martyrs in Tuffley, Gloucester. The Mass is part of the ‘Year of Prayer for Vocations’ being kept by the Gloucester Deanery.

A display promoting vocations is touring the parishes in the deanery and was on display in the English Martyrs during this mass. The display remains in each church for a month before being moving onto another parish.

Priests and people from all over the deanery came together to celebrate vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and the religious life.

During the Mass everyone was asked to take a card and to personally pray regularly for the person or community named on their card.

These cards contained the name of a priest, deacon or religious living and working in the Gloucester Deanery or one of the religious communities located in the deanery. Individual cards were also made out for those within the Clifton Diocese who are in training for the priesthood or diaconate.

Father Martin McLaughlin OSB, the Bursar of Prinknash Abbey, preached at the Mass and reminded everyone of the need to offer all aspects of our life up to God and the importance of being prepared to follow the life we are called to - even when it is not one that we expected.

Father Keith Miles, the Parish Priest at English Martyrs, presided at the mass which was concelebrated by many of the deanery priests.

Father Keith said: “It is important that everyone felt they had a part to play in this year of vocations that we are keeping as a local initiative. Giving everyone a person or community to pray for does this. It is also a great support for us to know that there is someone unknown to us who is regularly holding us up in their prayers and supporting our own vocation. About 55 cards were taken and fortunately only one person ended up with their own card! - though they were able to swap it with someone else.”
