To mark the annual World Day of Prayer for Vocations in the Clifton
Diocese we are launching a series of vocational stories. Each week we
will present a different answer to the question, 'What inspired me to
be a priest or religious?'
We are fortunate to have an eclectic mix of clergy and religious
working in our diocese. Each contributor has their own remarkable story
about their response to God's call. Maybe one of the accounts will
resonate with your relationship with God and desire to serve His
Church. However the stories speak to us, they are the accounts of God
calling ordinary people to live extraordinary lives.
Father Robert King, Clifton Diocese Vocations Director
Father Robert’s story:
From an early age the Church as a community has been important in my
life. The unique position a priest held in both the parish and wider
community fascinated me. While I felt close to God I never thought of
myself as being gifted or holy enough to be a priest.
My thoughts on priesthood changed as I witnessed a priest helping
vulnerable people and revealing something of himself in the process. I
began to see him as an ordinary man making a difference by allowing God
to work in and through him. Priesthood began to seem possible.
After prayer and much discernment and many conversations with others I
decided to offer myself for the priesthood. The road to ordination was
one that took me through highs and lows. The belief that God was
calling me to a unique life continued to be an inspiration.
As a priest I enjoy the possibilities that God gives me and rejoice
that I am able to offer myself fully, strengths and weaknesses, for the
proclamation of his Kingdom.
