Monsignor Canon Gabriel Leyden, Parish Priest of Corpus Christi in Weston-super-Mare and Vicar General of the Clifton Diocese has commented following the destruction of the town’s Grand Pier.
Monsignor Gabriel told
cliftondiocese.com, “The fire at the Grand Pier is a sad day for Weston-super-Mare. It is like a bereavement for all in Weston. Our thoughts and prayers are with the owners and the people of the town. No doubt, the Pier will be restored to its former glory, and greatness will rise from the ashes.
“The Pier is only five or six minutes walk from Corpus Christi Church and as I walked along the seafront it was a sad sight to see flames and smoke and falling debris. I often walk, sometimes with one or two other priests, around the Pier and it's a great place to meet parishioners.
“Fortunately, the blaze happened at about 7.00 am when the place was empty. It had been packed with visitors the previous day.”
