People from Weston-super-Mare’s Corpus Christi Catholic Parish have
taken part in events ranging from bingo to pamper evenings to help
their brothers and sisters in Peru.
To date a generous £2,298.97 has been given to the Clifton Diocese Peru
Appeal - which aims to raise funds for the San Antonio Parish in
Moquegua region of southern Peru to build their own Church.
The donation comes from many areas of Corpus Christi’s parish life and
includes a percentage of the weekly Sunday offertory, Thursday
afternoon bingo and entertainment, a special pamper evening for the
ladies of the parish, as well as personal donations.
Carmel Keyes, together with husband Bob organise the bingo sessions.
Carmel said, “The fund raising appeal has been well worth it - for so
many people. Not only has the bingo and other activities contributed to
the Clifton Diocese Peru Appeal, it has been so enjoyable for people
here in Weston-super-Mare who have joined in.”
There are 25 to 30 regular bingo players who meet up at Corpus Christi
Parish Hall in Ellenborough Park South, every Thursday from 2.00 pm
until 4.00 pm. Refreshments are provided for players and all funds
raised are destined for the Clifton Diocese Peru Appeal. Bingo sessions
resume, after a little Christmas break, on Thursday 11 January. Carmel
added, “All are welcome – please just come along!”
Corpus Christi’s Parish Priest, Monsignor Canon Gabriel Leyden, said,
“It has be great to see so many people organise and take part in such a
wide range of activities to help people so far away. We are lucky here
in Weston, that we have a lovely Church and excellent facilities to
enjoy and meet our friends and neighbours. So it is fitting that we can
help people in the San Antonio Parish in Peru who are planning to build
their own Church and community facilities. We’ll continue fundraising
for the Clifton Diocese Peru Appeal until Easter 2007.”
On hearing of the news Father Danny O’Sullivan San Antonio Parish
Priest, who is a priest of the Clifton Diocese and originally from Bath
said, “I feel very humble that our friends in Weston-super-Mare have
been so kind with their time and managed to raise such generous
donation. I thank them for their support and appreciate their desire to
help us here in Peru a part of the universal Church community.”
