Weston’s Gift for Peru

Parishioners in Weston-super-Mare have generously donated to a special appeal to assist fellow Catholics in Peru.

A cheque for £2,175 has been sent to the Clifton Diocese Peru Appeal which is to support the Parish of San Antonio in the Moquegua region of southern Peru.

The special appeal is to help the Peruvian parish build a church. The local connection is San Antonio’s Parish Priest - Father Danny O’Sullivan - a priest of the Clifton Diocese who is originally from Bath.

Chris Simpson, a parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes in the Milton area of the town, said:

“We arranged a special collection when Father Danny recently visited us. We had a parish cream tea and other events such as a books, videos and CD sale.

“We have been donating to Father Danny for years but a special push is being made this year because of Father Danny’s project to build a church, being promoted by Bishop Declan.”

During a pastoral visit to Peru in 2005, the people of the San Antonio Parish asked the Bishop of Clifton, Right Reverend Declan Lang, for help from the people of Clifton Diocese to assist in building a Church for this new and thriving Parish. Land has been set aside and plans drawn up. San Antonio was declared to be a parish by the local Bishop in November 2004, but the people have no hope of ever building a Church without help.

Father Danny O’Sullivan, sent his thanks from Peru to Weston-super-Mare, saying:

“Together as brothers and sisters in the Lord we can achieve so much. Thank you for your generosity and support.”
