Junior school children at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in
Chippenham took part in the Song for Peace. They held a special
assembly led by headteacher, Steve Riley and talked about why they had
come together.
In 1981 the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution
declaring an International Day of Peace. In 2001, the United Nations
General Assembly adopted a new resolution declaring 21 September of
each year as the International Day of Peace. Since then individuals,
charities and community groups around the world have been encouraged to
mark the day in some way.
Here in the UK, the largest teaching union representing teachers and
headteachers, NASUWT, joined forces with two charities: Peace One Day
and Youth Music. Together they encouraged schools up and down the
country to lead the celebrations by singing the song No Wars Will Stop
Us Singing on 21 September 2006. The song was written by award-winning
composer Debbie Wiseman MBE and Oscar-winning lyricist Don Black OBE.
NASUWT describe the project as “historic” and “aims to unite the
nation’s children in song”.
“This has been a good experience for the children, being part in a
national event such as this” said Mr Riley. “We registered through
NASUWT and were sent a pack with the music, CD and information about
how the song came about. During our assembly, the children sang the
song through twice, and did really well. We have only been practising
it this last week and it’s quite a difficult song to learn. I will be
interested to find out how many schools have taken part in today’s
event.”
