In June 1988 it was decided to start a “coffee morning” after the
Sunday 9.30 Mass on at the Holy Ghost, Yeovil. The initial purpose
being to give parishioners somewhere that they could meet each week and
get to know each other better, at the same time promoting a feeling of
community amongst those that wished for it. There were to be no fixed
charges for the refreshments but donations would be accepted.
Later that summer we had a visit from Father Danny O’Sullivan,
previously a curate at St George’s in Taunton, he was already known to
some of our parish. At the time of his visit he was serving the parish
of Paroquia “Christo Rey” in Chimbote on the north western coast of
Peru. He came to tell us about his parish in Peru, the missionary work
that he was doing there and also to appeal for some financial help.
We were so impressed by what he had to say that after his visit, we
decided to try and help support him by sending him the proceeds from
our “coffee mornings” and in February 1989 we were able to send him our
first donation of £75. Although at times the amount collected each week
has been quite small over the years we have manage to send him a total
of £5100.
From Chimbote Father Danny moved to Paroquia Nuestra, “Senora del
Perpetuo Socorro” in Zarumilla in the far north of Peru on the border
with Ecuador, from there he was sent to the far south almost on the
borders with Bolivia and Chile to Paroquia “San Felipea Apostola”,
Carumus, Moquegua and then to his currant parish; “Mision Catolica San
Antonio - San Francisco” Moquegua.
With our small contribution and the many other contributions he has
received from other parishes in the diocese we know that he has been
able to achieve a great deal in helping the people that he has been
sent to serve. The reports we get from him in regular newsletters have
been very inspiring and humbling. In the time that he was in Chimbote
for example he had built six canteens, a small bakery, a clinic, a
chapel and set up a library and communications centre, as well as
providing food, clothes, medicines, books, bibles and educational aids,
with Baptisms, First Holy Communions and Confirmations in numbers that
would be astounding in many diocese in this country.
At times, the reports as well as relating the success stories, have
indicated the very real problems that he and his parishioners have had
to face not only with poverty and hardship but also due to political
unrest in the country, at times his position there has put him in
danger, and in 2002 there was an earthquake in Moquegua which claimed
200 lives and injured many more.
We feel pleased that as well as being able to spend time with our
fellow parishioners and being able to foster a sense of community, that
at the same time we have been able to help, albeit in a very small way,
the lives of our brothers and sisters around the other side of the
world and we would want to thank all those in our parish family who
have helped, supported and donated to this end over the past eighteen
years.
